Advantages of prefilling syringes

October 24, 2022

Prefilled syringes are not a new technology. Most of the previous applications are widely used in the application fields of insulin and human growth hormone.

It has several outstanding advantages: no cross-infection during use, convenient use by medical staff, full use of some advanced drugs, no residual liquid, and suitable for self-injection on site. Prefilled syringes are used in a wide variety of applications such as multiple sclerosis, infertility, osteoporosis, hepatitis, rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, anemia, and hemophilia. The needs of patients are the real driving force behind the development of prefilled syringes. Getting medicine from a vial into a syringe is a time-consuming task and one that is prone to errors by those without adequate training. Also, for some diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, are often difficult to even hold the vial and measure an accurate dose.

Prefilled syringes significantly reduce product overfilling. With prefilled syringes, you can save 10%, 15%, and sometimes even 20% of the drug substance. Some manufacturers that have switched from vials to prefilled syringes have also reduced API production because new formulations no longer require as many APIs.

Studies have shown that the dose in a prefilled syringe can be 23% higher than in a vial because there is less drug loss during the transfer from the vial to the syringe.
